A Writing Prompt to Help You Get to Your Personal Brand

In this week’s video, Cynthia Hartwig, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Two Pens, talks about her favorite writing prompt designed to help business people develop an authentic and personal brand. The trick is to figure out what you are most passionate about–whether you’re working for someone else or building your own company. If you can identify what you care deeply about and create a brand around that passion, you will be able to find a following of like-minded people.
In Two Pens classes, we use this writing prompt to help business people figure out an authentic and personal brand. We only write for three minutes but you’ll need to write more if you want to get to the heart.
Cynthia Hartwig, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Two Pens:
Welcome back to our second branding exercise. Now what I want you to do is take a pen and I want you to write about the real thing about you and your brand.
You’ll use the prompt line “The real thing about me and my brand.”
Let me set this up a little bit before you do your writing exercise. You’re going to be more successful establishing your brand if it’s something you care deeply about. You want to pick the thing that makes your heart go pitty-pat… you want to pick the thing that in your heart-of-hearts you have passion for.
So you have to write about what is thing that either ties you to the company you work for or that establishes your brand for your own company.
So now just write for three minutes—no stopping, no crossing out, you can swear as much as you want—just write using the start line “The real thing about me and my brand.” Go for at least three minutes [or more].
That prompt should help you get to the essential and authentic thing that will help you establish a brand people actually want to follow.
